The OEM Golf Society was born out of a previous society called The ENM Golf Society.
This society was originally set up in the 1960’s exclusively for employees of English Numbering Machines Ltd (ENM) a Ponders End based manufacturer of Hand Numbering and dating equipment.
The founders included Jim Trail. Malcolm Stuart and Robbie Roberts. The format, which has largely remained unchanged, was for members to play a weekly match each Monday after finish of work throughout the summer and autumn. In addition there were two or three outings each season when guests were invited.
At 4.30 on the match day each week it was possible to see a rush of staff and management making for the local public golf course. Needless to say all management meetings and the like took second place on golf days.
Sadly ENM Ltd gradually reduced in size from a peak of about 1200 employees, was initially relocated to Southgate then, merged with a factory in Yorkshire.
The society almost folded when ENM Ltd moved but, was saved by Ben Grant, owner of OEM Marketing Services Ltd, who had been Sales Director of ENM Ltd, but left to start his own business in 1976. Ben had continued as a member of the society and the name was changed to OEM Golf Society in 1986.
The society has since then flourished with a membership which still includes some past employees of ENM Ltd and most importantly with the same friendly but competitive atmosphere.
